Social media has affected the way people read news and interact with news. With more and more people using online sources for news rather than the traditional ways, it changes the way news channels review which content to publish.
One of the main changes, is that the news that is posted online. It usually doesn't last more than one week. On average only about 10% or less stays on the top story online throughout an entire week, when the traditional media will focus on one story for more than week about 50% of the time. Another big trend is the able to comment and reply on many of the different forms of social media. This has a big impact because now the news can be updated within the minute of the event happening, making it faster and faster to get up to date news.
With more people using online sources for news more everyday the news channels need to adapt to these growing demands. With the traditional media it was a lot easier to persuade a certain idea and force certain beliefs that you have, but with social media/ online trends growing the news corporations have to add a place for people to comment and reply to, and have to post more neutral based messages. Another way that the online trends have changed news channels is the new idea of conversations between many people rather than just digesting the content only from the news channel. Now people can join big chat sessions with many other people and talk about events such as elections through Facebook. The last major way it has changed news channels is the way the news providers are getting a bigger audience is to now have people share what they read through different social media sites. Now people can share with their friends what they read when on the different news sites. This new impact changes the way people believe wither or not content is valuable. Now the news channels have to focus on how many people share and like the content rather than just advertising their company.
In conclusion the news channels have to focus on coming up with relevant content that people will share to their friends. News channels also have to post more up to date content that isn't biased towards one view, as there is more competition growing online. News channels have adapted for the better as they now focus more towards what the population wants to read rather than having hidden agendas.
First, to add onto your post, the traditional media sources usually have to wait till their time on the air to show what has been going on with the world, but with social media involved, it has changed the times that news reaches us now. Instead of waiting and having to watch the news to keep up-to-date, we can check social media or apps on our mobile devices to be informed right away. With the information coming to the general public quicker, there are advantages and disadvantages that come along. For example, when a lockdown happens at a school that is not a drill, the students will be posting onto social media to find out what is happening and the school can keep students up-to-date on the situation to keep away or not to panic. But the disadvantages to this would be students panicking from being on social media and receiving the wrong information from other students. In conclusion, the quality of information is not always right but majority will benefit from the more efficient way of getting news and information straight away.
ReplyDeletei agree with you , whatever information or news social is providing to people it is not accurate sometime it could be misleading or wrong. i would say that in the past, there were no many options but in this current century people have more option and this is the way people can connect to the world and get information up-to date. in the past only older people used to interested to read news but now, young generation are getting involved and sharing their thoughts, and ideas regarding information or news.
ReplyDeleteGood post. I also stand with you on your opinion. It's funny - you have the exact same example as I do in my blog post. Relative, and totally explainable. Social media is a good way to get ahold of knowledge, but to not always take it for granted. As we all agree that the information is not always correct.
ReplyDeleteI think traditional media still plays a major part in our society. Although, news travels a lot quicker through social media allowing us to see breaking news within seconds of it happening, it also creates the ability for fake stories to be published about events happening. When someone witnesses a major event they feel as if they know all the facts. Once it is published online it creates more awareness which can lead to a false story being spread around the world. That's where traditional media although get the news a lot later and broadcast it not as soon as it happens, but they have the ability to set the fact straight and figure out the truth behind what has happened before broadcasting it to the world. I agree though that they need to up their social media to be able to keep up with the world and their readers. But, not everyone has the same views or opinions so it would be wrong for a news channel to only pick one side or one view and focus on that. I also agree with your statement that this generation is now becoming a lot more interested in the news and what is happening around them all because of the easy access they can get to this information from social media. Good job on your post!
